I'm a little behind the curve on this, but it bears mentioning now anyway so you can go ahead and get in line now: Barry Sonnenfeld, who worked as the cinematographer on the first three Coen brothers films before moving on to The Addams Family franchise, Get Shorty and the blockbuster hell of RV, will join the Joel and Ethan Coen at the Apple Store Friday for a discussion of their early collaborations.
I can unequivocally say (once I've reacquired my jaw from the floor) that this should be the single most rewarding event of the entire festival. Yes, yes -- that includes the Dirty Dancing karaoke sing-along by the river; we shouldn't forget that Dirty Dancing was a distant runner-up to Raising Arizona for the best film of 1987 (really, it's the best comedy ever made), and that both Arizona's and Blood Simple's unhinged camera kinesis are arguably the signature achievements of the trio's respective careers. Am I being hyperbolic? We'll fight about it in the queue.
For more info, check out indieWIRE, which is hosting this and a series of other filmmakers chats throughout the festival. -- STV
