Sources close to the New York International Independent Film and Video Festival told The Reeler today that Abel Ferrara's comedy Go Go Tales will land in New York on July 26 for what would be its US premiere. The story of a Chelsea stripclub owner (Willem Dafoe) facing imminent foreclosure, the film pleased most critics at its recent Cannes premiere and has since been selected for the Munich Film Festival, where it has screened this week.
A festival staffer noted with "90 to 95 percent" certainty that Go Go Tales is confirmed for the festival -- sure enough, evidently, to publicize and begin selling tickets to the one-night engagement at the Village East (but not to add Ferrara's name or the plot synopsis). Ferrara has screened three of his most recent films at NYIIFVF, including last year's Mary, New Rose Hotel and 'R Xmas, but was not reachable for comment from his Rome base; another festival representative noted that it is awaiting "final technical details" before officially locking Go Go Tales into its program.
Stay tuned for more as the festival schedule settles and additional details are forthcoming.
