A note just slipped under the door at Reeler HQ confirms that Abel Ferrara will be on hand this Thursday at the Walter Reade Theater when the Film Society's Young Friends of Film screen the director's 1990 classic King of New York.
The movie was the talk of that year's New York Film Festival, mostly for marking the first and only time tampons were ever used as the punchline of a joke in any NYFF selection ever. It is arguable whether or not the film holds up 17 years later; if the programmers are smart they will run Ferrara's otherworldly DVD commentary track over the screening, thus restoring whatever immediacy its hairstyles and tapered trousers have cost it these many years since.
King actor and Bad Lieutenant co-writer Paul Calderon will also be on hand; for tickets and more information, visit the Film Society's Web site.
